The Working Aptitude Evaluation (WAE) is a temperament test specifically designed for Dobermanns. The aim of this test is to evaluate the inherent charactor of each individual Dobermann to see whether they have the aptitude to do the work for which the breed was originally developed. Those that pass this evaluation earn their Working Aptitude Certificate (WAC) title.

Scores are determined as per the following:
+ 3 Very strong approach behaviour. Needs no encouragement.
Is bold, confident, egotistical.
+ 2 Strong approach behaviour. Needs little encouragement.
+ 1 Sufficient (mild) approach behaviour. Needs encouragement.
Or appropriate desired behaviour.
0 No measurable response to stimulus. Or disinterest.
- 1 Insufficient approach or mild avoidance. Does not recover within time frame.
Or mild inappropriate behaviour.
- 2 Strong avoidance behaviour. Or, strong inappropriate behaviour.
- 3 Panic behaviour. Strong escape reaction.
